Addiction is just as much of an excruciating disease as cancer. While you may have made the choice to use your addictive substance of choice or engage in your addictive behavior of choice, you did not choose to lose control. Your susceptibility to addiction was determined by a combination of genetic and psychological. Addiction is a fatal disease, but it is not a death sentence. In fact, addiction is one of the most treatable diseases. There is no medical cure for addiction, but the disease can be arrested with the right combination of treatments. Your life is worth the fight.

Ways to Recover from Addiction

Your strongest weapon against addiction is a quality inpatient rehab center. Inpatient rehab has been proven to be the best treatment for addiction because it allows you to be isolated from the rest of the world while you are solely focusing on your addiction. You will not be able to have access to addictive substances or be triggered by relapse triggers. Studies show that the longer you are in rehab, the less likely you are to relapse because you are away from the addictive substance for a longer period of time. Ninety days or more is the recommended amount of time. Many people choose to go away to rehab in Florida because of its healing environment. Fort Myers treatment center is an excellent choice in the South Florida area.

Outpatient Rehab

Outpatient rehab programs are excellent supplements to inpatient treatment. Outpatient rehab provides reinforcement of the concepts learned in rehab. Group sessions make up the majority of outpatient rehab, but individual counseling can be requested. Many outpatient rehab centers host multiple sessions to accommodate all schedules.

Sober-Living Facilities/Halfway Houses

After rehab, many people opt to live in a sober-living facility or a halfway house. Sober-living houses are typically privately-owned while halfway houses are typically government funded. The benefits of living in a sober-living facility or halfway house is being able to receive support from others who are newly in recovery, make a gradual transition to living on your own in the outside world, and have access to meetings and other recovery resources. Household chores are divided among residents, and a small rent is required each month.

Support Groups

The most well-known recovery support groups are 12-Step Meetings. However, as addiction treatment is progressing, other support groups are popping up (e.g. SMART Recovery, LifeRing Secular Recovery, Women for Sobriety, etc.). The benefits of support groups is the ability to collaborate with other recovering individuals on solutions to problems that may derail recovery.

Living a Healthy Lifestyle

Holistic treatment is the best treatment for addiction. The mind, body, and spirit must be treated. Many recovering individuals adhere to a healthy diet and fitness regimen. Avoiding unnecessary stress is most important during the several years of recovery. Many people who are recovering from addiction state that they have to be selfish when it comes to their recovery. Self-care is not selfish.
